Joe CoughlinThe timbre and precision of the vocals are unmistakable. The control and quality and commitment to the lyrics is undeniable. Whether the song is a nostalgic barroom ballad, a dusky blues number or jazzy riff, the voice, like the rendition, is as singular as its owner. A quadriplegic, Joe won the DuMaurier Search for Stars in 1979 and was named Jazz Report’s Male Vocalist of the Year in 2000. Joe is a mainstay at jazz festivals, on CBC radio and TV, fronting big bands and intimate trios, as well as doing voice-over, studio and writing work. He is among a handful of male jazz singers who can perform with authority in front of a big band. Joe’s remarkable band is Ross Taggart on piano and sax, Pat Coleman on guitar, Ken Lister on bass, and Buff Allen on drums.
