History of the Tutti Ensemble
Presentation by Pat Rix
The Story of Tutti
A disability arts organisation which came about by evolution rather than design.
Looking back, Tutti is a love story. It began with both parties unaware of the potential. Over the years it warmed until excitement of singing together caused it to become a tale of passion. The magic began back in 1997 when a survey amongst clients and staff at Minda Inc, a residential centre in South Australia for people with an intellectual disability, identified a need for a singing group. Their recreation officer approached musical director Pat Rix who agreed to give it a trial for three months and the fledgling Holdfast Bay Choir was born.
Today that little group of ten people with intellectual disabilities has grown into the 140 strong Tutti Ensemble and Tutti performing Arts Centre and become an international model of artistic excellence and genuine social inclusion. Their aim is the creation of new non-stereotypical music theatre and opera and the experience of disability informs all new work created, challenging and transforming public attitudes about disability at every level.
