Skydive explores uncharted territory in the theatrical
landscape through
the development of a new play that incorporates aerial choreography for a
performer with a physical disability. The story you hear is that of a 30-second
skydive gone terribly wrong. The deep-seated conflict in a life-long relationship
between (seemingly) the best of friends unfolds in the exaggerated experience
of an extreme moment of crisis, as thirty seconds of life explodes across
90 minutes of playing time. A physically stylized theatrical presentation
that masks and reveals disability, utilizing the innovative aerial choreography
of Sven Johansson and his ES Dance Instruments, with Bob Frazer and Kevin
Kerr. Quadriplegic from a spinal cord injury, James is committed to positive
and accurate representations of disability in media. His goal is to represent
characters with a disability in stories where issues of disability are not
the central source of conflict. Disability, with all its images and attributes,
then simply becomes a natural form of characterization adding dimension to
a character.
Skydive combines a heartfelt narrative with the excitement of a circus. It is an intense physically stylized show that masks and reveals disability in a wild ride through universal issues that blows away barriers and boundaries.

Bob Frazer and James Sanders combine their life experiences from theatre with their personal relationship to form the source for this creation-based work. Playwright Kevin Kerr, with the assistance of a dramaturg, will draw from design, staging, choreography, and the actors’ impulses to inspire the early body of text.
Realwheels is a new society formed to facilitate the professional development of artists with disabilities in various media forms. Quadriplegic actor James Sanders is teaming up with Jessie award-winning actor Bob Frazer and Governor General award-winning playwright Kevin Kerr to create a new theatrical show Skydive that will incorporate Sven Johansson’s aerial choreography using the ES Dance Instruments. Realwheels is honored to present a staged reading of this inaugural production at Kickstart2.
