Theatre

In May, 2002, grants from the City of Vancouver Office of Cultural Affairs and the BC Rehab Foundation enabled S4DAC to co-produce two Mavor Moore plays, Getting In and The Store, with Theatre Bagger (who secured funding for the project from the Canada Council for the Arts) and Real Wheels Productions. The two one-act plays were directed by Trevor Found, featured actors James Sanders, Laurie Anne Levier and Peter Scoular, and were presented at Studio 16 in Vancouver. Two actors, a woman is talking to a man

The plays gave local actor James Sanders (who uses a wheelchair) an opportunity to hone his craft, and the partnership provided S4DAC with a valuable opportunity to learn about realizing a production from start to finish.

The show was an artistic success. Playwright Mavor Moore, who is an icon in the Canadian theatre world, attended the opening night and later sent this enthusiastic response:

I've been continuously thinking about the show since I was there, then it suddenly dawned on me that I hadn't written to thank all of you for one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had in the theatre. ... What absolutely knocked me out was your collective fidelity to the text & texture of the plays. I don't think there was a nuance missed, and the tough challenges in the staging (which include subtle ways of snapping out of the static situations) were all met with ingenuity and skill. The set worked very well, with much credit due the lighting designer, and the props & other details gained from being spare & on target.

I'm grateful to each and every one of you, including the backstage crew, for giving your imaginations and yourselves so whole-heartedly to bringing the plays to life. I must especially thank Trevor Found, because as a director myself I know that when a production as a whole works as well as this one did, great credit is due whoever makes it all work together. Head and shoulders shot of two men who acted in the plays Getting In and The Store. The actors' names are James Sanders and Peter Scoular.

I hope you're getting the houses you deserve, some intelligent reviews, and the sense of satisfaction you've all earned.
Affectionately. . . . Mavor
