Presented by the Society for Disability Arts and Culture with assistance from:

Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation

People with disabilities are ideally suited to contribute to the discourse on cyborgs (human/machine hybrids). They exist on the front lines of medical augmentation by virtue of the fact that they are perceived as “needing fixing”.

In Borg Again, seven artists with diverse disabilities rethink cyborg culture from their own diverse perspectives. Marilyn Cherenko asks that we see past the cyborg to the human. Shaira Holman explores cyborg gender options. Emma Kivisild advertises her friends and family as the latest in assistive technology. Irene Loughlin and collaborator Naufus Ramirez-Figueroa are hyper-happy cyborgs on drugs. Buz Onezed is a reconstructed techno-prankster, and Cleo Pawson clothes the daily pain of her cyborg implants.

Cyborg Dance workshop with Helen Walkley

Sunday, January 25, 2004 and Sunday, March 14, 2004

The Society for Disability Arts and Culture is announcing the 2nd and 3rd of three movement workshops with local dance artist Helen Walkley. Part of each half-day session will explore a cyborg (human/machine hybrid) theme. The workshops will serve as research to develop an original movement/theatre production to premiere at the international kickstART2 Festival of Disability Arts and Culture in Vancouver, September 16-19, 2004.

The workshops will take place at the Scotiabank Dance Centre on January 25, 2004 and March 14, 2004. Both workshops are on a Sunday from 12:30 to 5pm. People with disabilities and teachers or dance artists interested in the potential of integrated dance are invited to participate. The workshops will be informative and fun for anyone regardless of their interest in cyborgs or in performing!

Register early, as the first workshop was sold out!
Please arrive at 12 noon to process your workshop fee.
Workshop fee: sliding scale $5 to $25
Registration Information: Geoff at 604.685.3368 info@s4dac.org
