Artist Statement

I am addressing two specific concerns in this project: the duality in meaning of the many terms used to describe various psychiatric conditions; and the fact that mental illness is often regarded as a form of performance art. I created this quilt using the bright, optimistic colours of psychiatric medications, and while this object is functional it would be suffocating to sleep under it.

Catalogue Description

David is a Victoria, BC-based artist living with mental illness who has been exhibiting work for over two decades and uses multimedia to produce objects based on mainly autobiographical themes. Crazy-Quilt is the second piece made for S4DAC. PILLows was part of Artitudes at kickstART! in 2001.
