Daniel Migneault

Artist Statement

Painting of two figures with purple flowers in backgroundAfter a spinal cord injury 14 years ago, I became a tetraplegic. I've been painting for around 6 years now and I am self taught. The medium I use mostly is acrylic.

In my work I don't aim for perfection, I tend more to have a Zen and contemplative approach towards painting. Sometimes I start with a certain theme or idea and end up with something completely different from the original idea. I like to experiment in different styles, and I try not to over analyse intellectually the meanings of my paintings.

Tall thin figures in foreground, six cubes of colour in backgroundI was asked if my disability influences my art work. My response to that would be obviously, “Yes like it influences every aspect of my life, just as much as art influences my life ,and just as much as my cultural background and my spiritual beliefs.”

I believe also that what we do as artists is always part of a collective consciousness. In any time that you live in, you end up influenced by the ethics, morals, media etc. etc. of that time, the same as others of that time. I simply hope in the few moments that you look at my paintings you will get a good feeling.

Enjoy the show.
